"Known But To God": The Unverifiable Identities of Disparus in France, 1914-1924
This thesis analyzes governmental and social anxiety regarding the unknown fates of missing soldiers after World War I in France. Testimony from trench journalists, diaries of soldiers and families, and legal and government texts illuminate military and social structures of investigation, as well as legal processes of closure, developed to conquer the bureaucratic and metaphysical problems presented by unidentified bodies and disappeared soldiers.
