Questioning the Category of Roman Love Elegy: Ovid’s Tristia IV as a “Res Getae” and the Power of Canon Formation

Rhode, Tyler

The definition of Roman Love Elegy is both subjective and it does not hold absolutely. This essay examines the process of canon formation, looking specifically at Ovid's Tristia. In addition, textual analysis of the works of "canon" Roman love elegy is directly compared. It is concluded that Roman Love Elegy is a artificial distinction and can be a dangerous heuristic when analyzing individual poems.
