Methodological Approaches to Measuring the Burden of Disease due to the Ten Leading Health Indicators in Healthy People 2010

Muennig, Peter A.; Gold, Marthe

Healthy People 2010 identifies 10 Leading Health Indicators (LHIs),which may be used to monitor the nation’s progress in improving its public health efforts. These LHIs are listed in Table1. Each of these indicators is a global behavioral risk factor, collection of diseases, or social factor that can be measured and tracked. Regardless of the nature of the indicator, each is associated with multiple illnesses or conditions. Presently, the nation’s progress towards improving health outcomes related to these measures is tracked via changes in incidence rates, mortality rates, as well as other objective-specific outcomes via large national data sets.
