Integrated Community-Based Waste Management toward a Low-Carbon Eco-City in Tangerang Selatan, Indonesia
Tangerang Selatan has adopted an integrated, community-based approach to municipal solid waste management to address rapid urban growth and limited landfill capacity. The city implements Recycle Banks (RBs) and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to promote source-level waste reduction, separation of organic and non-organic waste, and recycling, aiming to reduce landfill input by 20%. The KIPRAH Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) program further mitigates greenhouse gas emissions through community-level aerobic composting, generating carbon credits verified by the Gold Standard. Strong collaboration among government, NGOs, and residents has enabled Tangerang Selatan to advance sustainable waste management while linking local actions to broader climate change mitigation goals.
