Participative Development of a Heat-Health Action Plan in Ahmedabad, India
Ahmedabad faces extreme heat from its semi-arid climate and urban heat island effects, threatening vulnerable populations, especially slum dwellers. Climate change is expected to make heat waves more frequent and severe, stressing the public health system. In response, the city implemented a Heat Action Plan and an Extreme Heat Early Warning System, combining forecasts, public alerts, health sector training, and coordinated responses. The participatory approach, involving communities and experts, has improved preparedness, with plans to expand green infrastructure, education, and replication across Gujarat.
