Something From Nothing? Currency and Finance in the Critical Period

Farber, Hannah

Setting aside the questions of whether Robert Morris’s financial stratagems were good or bad, and of whether Morris himself was a good or bad man, we can ask: What was the “nothing” out of which Morris created American wealth and orchestrated the funding of the Revolutionary War? If we put the question this way, it becomes immediately obvious that the “nothing” was not actually nothing—it was a lot of different things, put together.
