Ms. Fr. 640 and the Béthune Collection

Debuiche, Colin

Studying the Béthune collection, which was integrated into the royal library in 1662, not only reveals the inclinations of diplomat and bibliophile Philippe de Béthune (1561–1649), the Duke of Sully’s brother, but also enables us to evaluate the place of Ms. Fr. 640 within this collection. More broadly, this analysis attempts to place this work in the intellectual and cultural context of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century France.
