On Translating Ellipsis in C. P. Cavafy’s ‘Che Fece … Il Gran Rifiuto’
In these days of MAGA and mega, what gets left out is the minor. Translating Greek poetry helps us think through what it means to be on the edges of Europe, a footnote to the concerns of larger countries in the West and East, not to mention its own past. Ellipsis, those three dots that signal something is missing in a line, is one way that Greek poets have of referring to their marginal status. What can translations, especially in a major language like English, tell us about this modern obsession with the lesser, the loser, and those who say no?
