Ecosystem-Based Climate Change Adaptation in the City of Cape Town

Anderson, Pippin M. L.

Cape Town is addressing urban climate change vulnerability through ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and disaster risk reduction strategies, integrating biodiversity conservation with flood and fire management. The city employs a combination of engineered solutions, such as retention ponds and decanalized rivers, alongside ecological measures, including wetland restoration, controlled burning, and invasive species removal. These initiatives support a “bionet” of connected green spaces that enhance urban ecosystem services, reduce flood and storm surge impacts, and provide green employment opportunities. Cape Town’s experience demonstrates the value of integrating ecological knowledge and community participation into urban climate resilience planning.
