Recurring Floods in Mombasa, Kenya: A Socio-Economic and Ecological Perspective

The port-city of Mombasa, Kenya is the gateway to six inland countries that rely on the port for their import and export. The port contributes to the changing urban form, which ranges from highways, new housing developments, the establishment of container storage facilities and increasing populations in the growing city. As a coastal and very habitable city, the city is regularly affected by extreme weather events such floods which destroy infrastructure and people’s livelihoods. This case study describes how the changing urban form is exacerbating the impact of floods and how various stakeholders can potentially work together to reduce the impact.
