War of Words: How Media Shapes Perceptions of Gaza 2023, 2024

De Morais, Savannah

This paper utilizes critical discourse analysis (CDA) and rhetorical framing analysis, using Theodore Van Leeuwen’s social actor theory, to examine US news outlets’ coverage of the October 7th, 2023, attack on southern Israeli towns by Hamas. It specifically analyzes coverage by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal of the attack and the ongoing war in Gaza. The analysis focuses on framing patterns and the representation of Israelis and Palestinians within American media. The findings reveal a pro-Israel bias in both publications, as Israeli sources are cited most frequently, and the framing predominantly centers and amplifies Israeli perspectives throughout the coverage.
