Building racial literacy in first year composition
This article advocates for the incorporation of racial literacy into first-year composition (FYC) courses, arguing that engaging students in discussions about race and racism is essential for their development. Through a three-month study conducted in a community college setting, the author explores what racial literacy skill-building looks like in FYC and how students can utilize their writing to enhance their racial literacy skills. The work contributes to the existing research emphasizing the necessity of addressing race in literacy education.
