Making Colored Wood in Ms. Fr. 640
Five entries on fol. 76r of Ms. Fr. 640 offer instructions for dyeing wood, without detailing the type of wood in question or the use to which the dyed wood is to be put. These entries are part of a larger cluster on the coloring of wood, bone, and horn that spans fols. 73r to 79r. This essay reconstructs the recipes for dyeing wood red and green, and it situates them in the context of wood inlay and marquetry, decorative techniques in vogue in early modern Europe.
