Treasures into Tractors

Unlike the widely publicized controversy surrounding Soviet and Nazi looting of art during World War II and its restitution, Soviet sales of masterpieces and other valuables during the interwar period have remained largely ignored outside a small community of scholars. Yet the Soviet government’s voluntary sales of Russian cultural heritage had far-reaching consequences for the international art market and perceptions of Russian art abroad.
