The study delves into the collective rights movement of Indigenous/adat women in Indonesia focusing on an organization, PEREMPUAN AMAN. The writing examines the work of the organization to elucidate, bridge, and disseminate the concept of the collective rights to Indigenous women, along with its role in advocating for these rights among other stakeholders.
Based on its concept and this research findings, the collective rights involve three areas of Indigenous women: knowledge, authority, and managing territory. In particular, the thesis explores why PEREMPUAN AMAN engages with different actors to enforce collective rights; how it facilitates the participation of women in those spaces; what the collective rights mean to the Indigenous women; and what role the women’s agency plays in this effort. Using qualitative method of in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document review, the research reveals that PEREMPUAN AMAN serves as an enabler for Indigenous women to actualize their collective rights through its programs and initiatives.
