New York's Staten Island Bluebelt

Ahern, Jack; Brauman, Robert

New York City’s Staten Island Bluebelt integrates ecosystem-based adaptation and urban stormwater management to address climate risks such as sea-level rise, storm surge, and extreme precipitation. Developed since the 1990s, the Bluebelt uses created wetlands, native vegetation, and engineered natural features to slow, store, and treat stormwater while providing habitat, recreation, and educational benefits. The program demonstrates cost-effective, multi-functional urban infrastructure that enhances biodiversity, water quality, and community engagement. This case highlights how nature-based solutions can simultaneously support climate resilience and urban ecosystem services.
