Managed Retreat in Oakwood Beach, Staten Island (New York City)
A community organization in Oakwood Beach, Staten Island successfully lobbied New York State for a neighborhood-scale buyout following widespread damage and flooding due to Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The successful buyout provides a model for future managed retreat programs on Staten Island and other areas vulnerable to sea level rise and storms.
