Public Enabling of Private Real Estate in New York
New York City’s real estate sector is a major economic driver, but waterfront redevelopment increases exposure to coastal flooding and storms, including risks from Hurricane Sandy and projected sea level rise. In response, the city established the Building Resiliency Task Force to update building codes, implement flood mitigation measures, and improve emergency preparedness. Pilot projects and planning initiatives like Vision 2020 and WAVES support private-sector adaptation and resilient construction. These efforts strengthen collaboration between public and private actors and enhance the city’s overall climate resilience.
