Riverine Management in Informal Settlement Areas: The Case of Auji River
Kisumu, a major city in western Kenya on the shores of Lake Victoria, is facing growing environmental challenges driven by rapid urbanization and climate change, including increased flooding and heat stress. Informal settlements, such as Nyalenda, are particularly vulnerable due to limited infrastructure and their location in environmentally sensitive areas. The Auji River, while providing important ecological services, is under pressure from encroachment, erosion, and pollution, exacerbating flood risks and public health concerns. Proposed interventions focus on river restoration, improved land management, and low-cost flood mitigation measures to enhance resilience and urban sustainability.
