The Drama of Celebrity: Sensation

Marcus, Sharon

This chapter explores celebrity culture's distinctively illiberal streak: its hierarchical structure, its physicality, and its appeal to the emotions. Many celebrities actively set out to dominate audiences who in turn relish being overwhelmed. Using rarely cited theater reviews, the chapter identifies and analyzes four performance techniques that stage star Sarah Bernhardt used to "mesmerize" and "electrify" her audiences: hyperextension, mobility, tempo variation, and framing.
