The Department of Biomedical Informatics focuses on research, teaching, and service. The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (C2B2) is an interdepartmental center at Columbia University, whose goal is to catalyze research at the interface between biology and the computational and physical sciences. Biomedical Informatics is the scientific field that deals with the storage, retrieval, sharing, and optimal use of biomedical information, data, and knowledge for problem solving and decision making. It touches on all basic and applied fields in biomedical science and is closely tied to modern information technologies, notably in the areas of computing and communication.

STLR publishes pieces dealing with the legal issues surrounding science and technology, including the Internet, biotechnology, nanotechnology and telecommunications law. STLR publishes twice a year, and is ranked third among all tech law journals in Washington and Lee Law Library's 'Impact Factor' ranking.
