- Each summer, the Hertog Global Strategy Initiative in the Department of History at Columbia University brings renowned experts and policy makers to Columbia University to deliver weekly public lectures and work with students in the program. The topic of the summer 2012 lecture series is "The History and Future of Religious Violence and Apocalyptic Movements." Richard W. Bulliet is a professor of history at Columbia University who specializes in the history of Islamic society and institutions, the history of technology, and the history of the role of animals in human society.
