Lava Jato’s Lessons, Leaks, and Lasting Impacts

Ganley, Karla Yvonne; Lagunes, Paul Felipe

The prevailing narrative surrounding Lava Jato is that the relevant authorities have managed to break with impunity in Brazil. The reality, however, is much more nuanced, starting with the fact that many important developments in the Lava Jato saga have actually occurred outside of Brazil’s borders. Thus, in this concluding chapter, we reflect on the complexity of the vast corruption scandal, and we do so, in part, by discussing the revelations stemming from leaked messages involving members of the Brazilian Judiciary. We also highlight some of the major lessons from the volume’s chapters, while discussing the points of agreement and disagreement held by our diverse set of chapter contributors. Our chapter closes by proposing areas of future research.
